Quite a few weightlifters and bodybuilders have tried to improve their physical appearance with the best muscle building supplements they can get. With such a demand, quite a lot of these products have been sold, though not all would qualify as any good. One of the more infamous was the early and mid 90s product known as ICOPRO.

ICOPRO (or Integrated Conditioning Program), while well known to the bodybuilding community, is probably best remembered by those in the professional wrestling community. The reason for this is that Vince McMahon, the kingpin of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE) had invested heavily in the supplement. As a result, McMahon's wrestling programming heavily advertised ICOPRO for much of the early 1990s period.

There was more to McMahon's investment than a personal interest in bodybuilding (though a genuine personal interest in bodybuilding did exist too). McMahon was in the process of establishing his own bodybuilding company at this time. This was to become known as the WBF, or World Bodybuilding Federation.

The WBF was set up as a direct competitor to Joe Wieder's IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding). Wieder held a virtual monopoly over bodybuilding (similar to the one McMahon enjoys now over professional wrestling), so the upstart organization caused many waves initially. McMahon promoted it as "bodybuilding the way it was meant to be" and felt his ICOPRO investment would benefit from its success.

These plans began to unravel badly in 1991 and 1992 when McMahon's organization was assailed by a massive steroid scandal and subsequent investigation by the federal government. The World Wrestling Federation was the focus of this attention, but inevitably the World Bodybuilding Federation also ended up being focused on too. Bodybuilders who abused steroids interpreted the mantra "bodybuilding the way it was meant to be" as a guarantee that they could join without fear of testing.

ICOPRO was similarly tainted by the scandal McMahon's business became embroiled in, inevitable considering he was its most prominent investor and promoter. He and his operations became indelibly linked with steroids when he folded the WBF and faced indictment from the United States Federal Government for conspiring to distribute steroids. ICOPRO was presumed to be a form of steroid, and this negatively impacted on sales of the supplement.

While McMahon was found not guilty on the distribution charges in 1994 and went on to retool his wrestling business, eventually making it the most powerful and prosperous pro wrestling promotion in the world, he would never try to make a mark in bodybuilding again. While he did continue promoting ICOPRO, he had to face the fact that the brand was too compromised by the scandal. Realizing this, McMahon plugged the plug on ICOPRO in 1995.

In summary, ICOPRO was not one of the best muscle building supplements ever made. Even if it were a good one, it could never have succeeded with the quagmire of scandal and perception such as that which engulfed Vince McMahon in the early 1990s. While the market has likely seen other dodgy products, few have had as colorful a story as ICOPRO, or been as directly linked in the public eye with steroid abuse as it was.
