A person who is planning to begin the career of cosmetology will want to make certain she or he chooses a school that is accredited. There are specific standards of the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Sciences. These are national standards and apply to the beauty school Sacramento institution of education.

The standards for accreditation are curriculum, quality of the education provided and the admission policy that is in place when the student applies. Accreditation is provided on an independent and autonomous basis. This commission is recognizable as an agency that accredits post-secondary schools of higher education.

Numerous courses of study are available in this field. You may find one that is a perfect fit for you. Women and men attend beauty college together and work in beauty salons side by side.

The chosen program determines how long it takes to become graduated and certified. It also depends on how many hours of training are required in the state you work in. Full-time students, of course, will graduate sooner than part-time students. However, all must reach the same level of knowledge and skill before they graduate.

As expected, a full curriculum at cosmetology college will take the longest number of class hours to complete. It can vary from 1500 to 2100 hours on a national average. Those programs that require fewer hours are not all-comprehensive as the full curriculum is.

To be certified in nail technology only requires 300 to 600 hours. The same number of hours are needed for make-up artists. Electrologists, estheticians and skin care providers must complete 300 to 1500 hours.

Each individual state has its own licensing board. That board sets the number of training hours that a student must complete. It varies widely from one state to another. California set the number at 1600 hours. It includes 3200 hours as an apprentice and 220 in training.

Then the graduate must apply to take a licensing examination. Also, the license must be be renewed every two years. This may be different in California and New York.
