Having sensitive skin is when one is prone to itching, stinging, redness and irritation when using cosmetics and toiletries. More than fifty percent of people, mostly women, are said to be affected by this condition. For those people with this condition, finding make up for sensitive skin is not as easy for those without it. Here are some tips for an easier search.

Every person has a different skin type. A brand that works for one person may cause allergies for another. What is common among people with this sensitivity is that they are best off using hypoallergenic products as these do not contain ingredients that cause irritation.

It is important for cosmetics to have an expiry date. Without an expiry date, most people will think that these can be used for a long time. Make up must not be used for over a year. When used for too long, there tends to be a buildup of germs on them, which would be harmful for your face. Moreover, make up paraphernalia must be washed with soapy water at least once a week.

The skin easily absorbs ingredients into your body, and some ingredients in cosmetics are more irritating than others. Examples of these are Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid and Boric Acid, among others. Thus, it's best to read up and stay away from such ingredients in order to avoid itching, irritation and other allergic reactions.

When a product has less ingredients, there will also be less chances that the user will get an undesired reaction. Thus when a product contains ingredients that it can do without, it's always better to just go without them. For this reason, fragrance-free products are better than its fragrant alternative especially for those with sensitivities.

All skin types, whether sensitive or not, need sun protection. For this reason, most cosmetic products now have sunscreen. Make up and sunscreen that is composed of physical UV blockers, instead of chemicals, are best. Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are common examples of physical UV blockers. Chemical ingredients, on the other hand, are Oxybenzone and Para-Aminobenzoic Acid, or PABA.

Before purchasing or using any type of cosmetics, it is always important to do a patch test behind your ear or on the inside of your elbow. If any redness or itchiness occurs in either of those areas, then you can be sure that the same will happen to the rest of your face. If there is no change to the area after applying the make up, then the product is most probably safe to use for the rest of your face.

Knowing what the product is made of is important in avoiding any allergic reactions. Although some products may claim that they are hypoallergenic, there is really no clear standards as to what would make a hypoallergenic product. Thus it is always best to educate oneself of the harmful chemicals that may cause irritations and check this with the product whenever possible.

Before starting the use of any product, it is always best to consult with a dermatologist or any other skin care expert. Some brands are preferred by dermatologists, and they will be able to tell you which make up for sensitive skin is best when you consult with them. Some may also consult with an allergist as most irritations are usually due to an allergy to a certain substance.
